Getting your first tattoo comes with many tattoo questions. Some feel easy to ask. Others feel embarrassing, scary, or even “stupid.” However, tattoo questions are normal. Everyone starts without knowing what to expect.
At Tattoo Kiss, I answer questions every day. This guide explains the tattoo questions beginners secretly want answered, so you can feel calm, informed, and confident.
Do Tattoos Hurt?
Yes, tattoos hurt. However, most people tolerate the pain well.
The feeling often resembles:
- Repetitive scratching
- Heat
- Intense vibrating or stinging
Pain depends on placement, session length, and your body. Areas with more fat hurt less. Areas close to bone hurt more.
Importantly, fear of pain is usually worse than the actual pain. Distractions help! So bring friends, a movie to watch, or plan on having a conversation with me. 🙂
Is the Wipe Really Wiping Blood?
Yes, but not as much as people imagine.
The wipe removes:
- Ink
- Plasma
- Small amounts of blood
Tattooing does not cause heavy bleeding. Instead, the skin releases minor fluid. The wiping keeps the area clean and visible.
Everything used is sterile and safe.
How Deep Does the Needle Go?
The needle enters the dermis layer of skin. This layer sits below the surface but above deeper tissue.
This depth allows the tattoo to stay permanent while healing safely.
Your body naturally repairs this area.
Will I Bleed a Lot?
Most people bleed very little.
Bleeding varies depending on:
- Body chemistry
- Tattoo location
- Hydration
- Medications
Even when bleeding happens, it stays controlled and normal. You can control the amount of bleeding by not taking blood thinners like aspirin or ingesting caffeine beforehand. Tylenol/acetaminophen is a good option if you want a pain killer.
What Does Tattoo Pain Actually Feel Like?
This is one of the most common tattoo questions.
Many people describe it as:
- Annoying rather than unbearable
- Sharp but tolerable
- Easier than expected
Your body also releases adrenaline, which helps you cope.
How Long Does Healing Take?
Tattoo healing happens in stages.
Typical timeline:
- 7–14 days: surface healing
- 4–6 weeks: full healing
During healing, you may notice:
- Peeling
- Flaking/scabbing
- Mild itching
This is completely normal. Make sure that you do not scratch off the scabs during the healing process to ensure the ink stays in. Keep the area moisturized for less scabbing and itching, as well as a smoother healing process.
Will the Tattoo Scab?
Small amounts of scabbing is normal. Heavy scabbing is not.
Proper aftercare helps prevent problems. Gentle washing and light moisturizing support smooth healing. Use fragrance-free soaps and lotions. A tattoo-specific aftercare gel or lotion like Mad Rabbit is the best option.
Never pick or scratch your tattoo.
Can I Shower Normally?
Yes. Showering is safe and recommended. Wait at least 1 hour after your appointment, preferably 12. When you wash, keep the tattoo out of the direct stream for long periods of time. Light washing, however, is recommended.
Before the 6-week healing process is complete, avoid:
- Baths
- Swimming
- Hot tubs
Submerging the tattoo slows healing, can spread the ink out, and can make the tattoo fade much quicker.
What If I Move During the Tattoo?
Small movement is normal. Artists expect breathing and natural motion.
However, staying still helps create clean results. You can always ask for breaks.
Communication makes the experience easier.
Do Tattoos Look Gross While Healing?
Healing tattoos can look strange temporarily.
You may see:
- Flaking
- Dryness
- Cloudiness
This stage is temporary. Once healed, the tattoo looks clear again.
What If I Regret My Tattoo?
Tattoo removal exists, but it takes time.
Removal involves:
- Multiple sessions
- Gradual fading
- Financial investment
Most tattoos fade successfully with laser removal. Still, choosing carefully reduces regret.
Will My Tattoo Age Poorly?
All tattoos age slightly. However, good care protects your tattoo.
Protect your tattoo by:
- Using sunscreen
- Staying hydrated
- Following aftercare
Well-done tattoos age beautifully.
